Mezzanine FAQs

What is a Mezzanine?

a low story between two others in a building, typically between the ground and first floors, adding to and optimizing space without having to construct new space solutions. They can also allow for means of ingress/egress to hard to reach areas of your facility.

What Are the OSHA Standards for Mezzanines?

Mezzanines must be protected from falls if they are 4 feet or more above a lower level. Guardrails must be installed on open sides and meet specific height and strength requirements. Additionally, mezzanines require a safe means of access.

What Are Mezzanine Floor Areas?

It is best defined as an intermediate floor area between main floors of a building or additional levels of a mezzanine. These floor areas can allow for a vantage point to watch the facility floor. They can also allow for better access to hard to reach areas of a facility.

How Much Weight Can a Mezzanine Floor Take?

Mezzanine floors can support between 125 to 500 psf for industrial and storage applications. This can differ between manufacturer and material used in construction. It is important to properly maintain your mezzanine to get the most support out of them and reduce risk of incidents.

How Does a Mezzanine Work?

It’s a subfloor or platform that allows for efficient use of space in a warehouse or facility. By adding a raised platform like a mezzanine in your facility, you will find that organizing things on or underneath them allows for more efficient space use. They can also be scaled by stacking more platforms on each other.

What is the Difference Between a Mezzanine and a Ground Floor?

The mezzanines act as a subfloor, stage, or a raised platform. Your ground floor also is going to be much more robust and support more weight. Mezzanines can withstand a lot of weight but also have safety guidelines regarding their capacity.

Do Mezzanines Require Two Exits?

According to OSHA guidelines, it is dependent on size. If your mezzanine is more than 50 square feet then the answer is yes. Anything less than that one exit is sufficient and compliant with OSHA.
